Lighthouse Tobacco & Mini-Market, located at 1933 West Elk Avenue, is a little different from other tobacco shops. This local family-owned and operated business has grown during its eight years, but still maintains a close relationship with its customers and community. Sometimes, being a little different does a lot of good. Kathy Oliver, the store's owner, discusses her business values: "We're not a huge franchise or corporation. We're one family trying to make an honest living as members of this community. Our roots are here. Our customers are our neighbors and friends. We are able to look them in the eye every day and know that we are offering them a fair deal." New customers may notice the absence of a "three-pack special" at Lighthouse Tobacco & Mini-Market. When asked about this, Oliver explained, "I'm not comfortable forcing my customers to spend more than they can afford just to save a few cents on multiple packs. They should be able to get the same low pricing whether they're buying one, three, or ten packs. "There's no need to play games," she continued. "I know my customers work hard for their money. It's tough to come by these days. So it's important for me to offer reasonable, straightforward pricing. My customers tell me they appreciate that." When asked if she planned to change her ways to match other stores, Oliver responded, "This is how we've done business for eight years. We've built a good relationship with our customers during that time. I don't see any reason to change our values now. We're proud to be a part of this community, and we want to be here for the long-haul." She works with local suppliers whenever possible in order to provide quality goods while supporting the local economy. In addition to tobacco products, the store offers a unique selection of accessories and gifts, such as cigarette cases, pipes, lighters, lottery tickets, knick-knacks and doo-dads. The store also carries Kimberlie's Kandles, wonderfully scented candles that are hand-poured in Jonesborough.
