Tobacco Under Fire in Africa

As would be expected, the tobacco industry came under heavy fire during a recent meeting in Mozambique hosted by the Africa Tobacco Control Regional Initiative and the Framework Convention Alliance. According to a story by Victor Emeruwa for AfricaNews, the one day meeting in Maputo heard how tobacco companies were taking advantage of the less stringent tobacco control laws in Africa to market their products, while, at the same time, the tobacco industry was using the law to silence those who tried to describe the harmful effects tobacco had on consumers and the poverty it brought to already poor nations.
