Philip Morris Donates RM3 Mln Worth Of Agronomy Material To Tobacco Farmers

Philip Morris (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (PMM) on Tuesday donated 450 tonnes of fertilisers, crop protection agents and other agronomy related materials worth RM3 million to tobacco farmers in Malaysia. Its Managing Director, Richard Morgan, also said the company would write-off approximately RM1.4 million worth of debts owed by farmers to PMM. With the announcement, PMM hoped about 330 tobacco farmers would be under less financial stress, he said before presenting the contribution to the national Kenaf and Tobacco Board. Morgan said PMM hoped the contribution would not only help ease the financial burden of the farmers but also help revive the tobacco growing sector and support efforts to improve crop quality. While saying that PMM remained committed to reducing the incidence of illicit cigarette trade, he added that the company would continue to work with the various laws enforcement agencies to overcome the illicit cigarette trade. "Ilicit cigarette trade, he said, not only affected companies such as PMM but also deprived the government of significant tax revenue," Morgan said. Enditem
