Zambia: Tobacco Firm Hands Over Borehole

BRITISH American Tobacco (Zambia) has said society expects companies to use their financial strength to demonstrate environmental responsibility and support for communities they operate in. Company managing director, Johan Grobbelaar said in Solwezi during the handover of a borehole sunk at a cost of K99 million at Kyawama market that more was expected from companies. "Today, perhaps more than ever before, society expects companies to use their economic strength for broader social goals and to demonstrate environmental responsibility, support for communities, high standards of ethical behaviour and greater transparency," Mr Grobbelaar said. He said British American Tobacco had decided to plough back some of its profits into the Solwezi community after receiving overwhelming support from the booming North-Western Province. And Provincial Minister, Daniel Kalenga applauded the company for partnering with the Government, saying the gesture was a reflection of the company's goodwill and friendship to the people of Solwezi. Area Member of Parliament, Watson Lumba commended the company and appealed to it to consider other needs. Enditem
