China: New Beijing Cigarette Factory Goes Into Operation

Beijing Cigarette Factory - a subsidiary of Shanghai Tobacco Group - went into operation at its new site in Tongzhou District in eastern Beijing City on January 18, 2010, upon completion of a costly three-year project of relocation and technical transformation intended to significantly enlarge its annual cigarette production capacity and upgrade its cigarette production technologies. On the day of its entry into operation, the new Beijing Cigarette Factory held a high-profile ceremony which was attended by Director-General Jiang Chengkang of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, Director Dong Haolin of Shanghai Tobacco Monopoly Administration, Tongzhou District Mayor Deng Naiping and other dignitaries. The project of relocation and technical transformation of Beijing Cigarette Factory was started in 2006. So far, a total investment of 1.2 billion yuan (172 million U.S. dollars) has been made in the implementation of the project. Covering a floor area of 370 mu (25 hectares), the new Beijing Cigarette Factory will have an annual cigarette production capacity of 500,000 cases (25 billion cigarettes). It was reported that the new Beijing Cigarette Factory will apply advanced information technology and logistic technology, and will manage to make its production process more systematic, more intelligent and more accurate.
