China: Waste Tobacco Processing Center to be Established in Southwest China

A grand ceremony was held in Huili County of Liangshan Prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan Province on December 28, 2009 to start the project of building the Liangshan Golden Leaf Waste Tobacco Processing Center, which will not only generate huge economic interests for Liangshan Prefecture, but will also contribute to protecting the local environment through cyclic use of waste tobacco. When its construction is completed, the Liangshan Golden Leaf Waste Tobacco Processing Center will be capable of using waste tobacco to produce 20,000 tons of organic manure, and 8,000 tons of effectual biological extractives in other forms, and will be capable of generating 120 million yuan (17.2 million U.S. dollars) in annual sales income. The project of building the Liangshan Golden Leaf Waste Tobacco Processing Center is jointly funded by Weifang Sanqiang Group Co., Ltd. in east China's Shandong Province, and Great Mount Liangshan Zhengda Foods Co., Ltd., Liangshan Mufu Traditional Chinese Medicinal Herbal Pieces Co., Ltd. and Chengdu City Sentai Investment Management and Consulting Co., Ltd. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by August 2010, and the remaining parts by the end of 2012. The Liangshan Golden Leaf Waste Tobacco Processing Center will be using waste tobacco as all its raw materials in production. Through processing with modern technologies, waste tobacco will be converted the facility into valuable materials. Establishment of the processing center is not only in conformity with the policies of the State on the development of an environment-friendly economy, a cyclic economy and a low-carbon economy, but will also contribute to realizing highly efficient application of resources, producing more valuable tobacco products, extending the industrial chain of tobacco production, and increasing the value added of tobacco. It was reported that when construction of the first phase of the project is completed, efforts will be made to enlarge its capacity of processing waste tobacco. The first-phase of the project is designed to produce Solanesol, nicotinamide, organic bacterial manure, etc., with the percentage of organic matters in its organic manure products expected to reach a high of 70 percent. With broad marketing prospects, the organic manure produced can be used for producing nuisance-free food and organic food. The second phase of the project is designed to extract essences from Solanesol, use nicotinamide to produce biological pesticides, etc. When the construction of the second phase of the project is completed, the whole project will form a modern cyclic industrial chain for comprehensive utilization of resources for agriculture. It is expected that the whole project will be capable of annually processing 30,000 tons of waste tobacco, and producing 20,000 tons of organic manure and 8,000 tons of effectual biological extractives in other forms, and will be capable of generating 120 million yuan (17.2 million U.S. dollars) in annual sales income in full operation.
