Star Scientific Files Appeal in Lawsuit Against Reynolds

Star Scientific Inc. said last week that it has filed an appeal regarding its patent-infringement lawsuit against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. The appeal, made to the U.S. Court of Appeals, is focused on the dismissal of a federal jury verdict June 16 that went in favor of Reynolds. The jury ruled that Reynolds did not infringe on two patents claimed by Star for a tobacco-curing method. Star sued Reynolds in May 2001 over a method of treating tobacco to prevent the formation of tobacco-specific nitrosamines. The company pursued hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for past alleged infringement and an injunction going forward to prevent future alleged infringement. Enditem
