Keep America Beautiful (KAB) says there has been an average US-wide reduction of cigarette litter this year of 48 per cent, a two per cent improvement on the performance during 2008 in the communities implementing KAB's Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP).
KAB has run and gradually expanded its CLPP during the past seven years with the support of Philip Morris USA.
The nation's largest program aimed at combating cigarette litter this year was implemented in more than 200 locations, such as downtown areas, roadways, beaches, parks, marinas and the venues of special events.
Tobacco products, including cigarette butts, are the most-littered item in the US, representing nearly 38 per cent of all items, according to "Litter in America", KAB's 2009 study of litter and littering behavior. Enditem
