Henan Province Adopts Plan for Developing Modern Tobacco Agriculture Source from: TobaccoChina Online 08/05/2009 The tobacco monopoly administration of central China's Henan Province has recently adopted a plan for the development of a modern tobacco agriculture in the province up to the year 2010, which foresees the designation of 54 counties in the province as tobacco-growing counties with a total tobacco acreage of 2.12 million mu (141,333 hectares).
The plan provides that the tobacco industry of Henan will invest a further 1.8 billion yuan (257 million U.S. dollars) by the year 2012 in greatly promoting the construction of infrastructure facilities for tobacco production in the province, including irrigation projects for tobacco fields, intensive curing barns, mechanized farming paths, etc, and in purchasing machinery and equipment for tobacco production, in order to improve production conditions in the tobacco-producing zones, and improve the quality and proficiency of leaf tobacco production in the province.
So far, initial success has been achieved in the operation of pilot projects in developing a modern tobacco agriculture in 10 villages in five townships in Luoyang, Sanmenxia, Nanyang, Xuchang and Pingdingshan Cities in the province. Enditem
