Jury Says Reynolds Tobacco Did Not Infringe on 2 Patents

A federal jury ruled last week that R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. did not infringe on two patents claimed by Star Scientific Inc. for a tobacco-curing method. Star Scientific sued Reynolds in May 2001 over a method of treating tobacco to prevent the formation of tobacco-specific nitrosamines. The company pursued hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for past alleged infringement and an injunction going forward to prevent future alleged infringement. Star Scientific's shares closed yesterday down 20 cents to $1.04. Enditem
