Jury Says Reynolds Tobacco Did Not Infringe on 2 Patents

A federal jury ruled last week that R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. did not infringe on two patents claimed by Star Scientific Inc. for a tobacco-curing method. Star Scientific sued Reynolds in May 2001 over a method of treating tobacco to prevent the formation of tobacco-specific nitrosamines. The company pursued hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for past alleged infringement and an injunction going forward to prevent future alleged infringement.
