Tobacco Manufacturer Expanding Operations

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- Smokeless tobacco manufacturer Conwood is expanding its operations in Clarksville. The company -- owned by Reynolds American, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., -- plans to purchase an existing building, according to The Leaf-Chronicle newspaper. The $115 million expansion is expected to create 15 to 25 new jobs. Conwood has been using locally grown tobacco to make snuff since 1907. Company senior director of manufacturing Bryce Sanders said the downtown plant is landlocked and the company needed room to expand. The company hopes to complete the purchase by late spring. The Industrial Development Board voted Wednesday to give the company an incentive package that includes a 47 percent property tax reduction over 10 years. Conwood also has plants in Winston-Salem; Memphis. Tenn.; and Bowling Green, Ky. Enditem
