Tennessee Burley is on Pace for Excellent Year Source from: Tobaccofarmquarterly.com Nov 13, 2008 11/17/2008 A recent article on the web site The Tennessean indicated that Volunteer State burley tobacco growers are closing out what appears to be an excellent year.
Despite increases in production costs and labor concerns, burley tobacco in Tennessee is expected to out-perform last year's crop by 22 percent. And while the 2007 crops suffered from a devastating drought, the projected increase is the first year-over-year increase since 1999.
Tennessee is projected to grow 25.4 million pounds this year on 13,000 acres of farmland. While the acreage total equals last year, the yield per acre is 1,950 pounds, up 350 pounds an acre over 2007. Enditem
