Strike Diminishes New Caledonia Cigarette Supply Source from: ABC Asia Pacific - Nov 11 2008 9:59PM GMT 11/13/2008 A strike of government employees in New Caledonia has resulted in an emergency delivery of cigarettes to the French Pacific territory.
For over three weeks the government's fiscal services have been on strike demanding higher wages.
As a result, government-owned tobacco suppliers in New Caledonia have been banned from making deliveries to wholesalers.
Almost every shop in New Caledonia sold the last of its cigarettes at the weekend.
An emergency purchase of an Australian brand was allowed to be delivered on Saturday, but sold out within hours.
The fiscal service strike is continuing. Enditem
