$9,000 Checks Await Plaintiffs Of Tobacco Lawsuit

Smokers and former smokers received their first checks last week from a legal settlement with the tobacco companies that took years to get through the courts. About 6,000 people who suffer from smoking-related illness or their survivors were plantiffs in a national class-action lawsuit. Each is eligible to receive a $9,000 check, with the possibility of more in the future. Local attorneys are trying to track down about 1,000 of those former clients to let them know they have checks waiting. Only those who participated in the lawsuit are eligible for a payment. Enditem
