Michigan Not Willing to Gamble on Casino Revenues Source from: tr.itsmyiq.com Sep 25, 2008 09/26/2008 Concerns about the possible impact on Detroit's casinos led to the Michigan House's narrow rejection on Tuesday of a bill that would have banned workplace smoking state-wide, according to a report by Dawson Bell for the Detroit Free Press.
The ban, which would have affected casinos, bars, restaurants and even smoke shops, garnered 50 votes, six short of the number needed for approval. Forty-nine members voted against it. Eleven were absent or abstained.
Opposition came primarily from Detroit lawmakers who said a ban would hurt casino revenues, which are shared by the city and state, and by other lawmakers who believed the ban was a government overreach into citizens' lives. Enditem
