Uganda: Eight Murdered in Hoima This Month Source from: The Monitor (Kampala) 22 September 2008 09/23/2008 Three murder cases were reported to Police in Hoima District last Tuesday putting the death toll to eight in the area since the start of the month.
Domestic violence and land wrangles were cited as the causes of the murders according to the Hoima DPC, Mr Martin Muwanika.The murder in Kyenjahi village, Kabale Parish Buseruka Sub-county occurred after Ms Beatrice Kyakutegekire quarrelled with her husband Henry Akugizibwe, over a child. Ms Kyakutegekire allegedly hit Mr Akugizibwe on the head killing him instantly.
She was still being held at Hoima Police Station by Friday. In Kyangwali, the murder occurred at night and the Police have arrested six key suspects while others are still at large. Mr Muwanika told Daily Monitor that the death at Nsonga landing site on Lake Albert in Kyangwali Sub-county occurred after a fight involving two people.
"One man cut the other with a machete and he died on the way to Nsonga Police Post. The suspect is in police custody," Mr Muwanika said. Kibaru a resident from Buliisa District was on a business trip. In Bulyango village Kitoba Sub-county an unidentified number of people broke into Continental Tobacco stores and killed the guard, Mr Joseph Sekiti, using a machete.
A porter at the store, Mr Benard Musau, and a resident only identified as Obeith were arrested to help with investigations.
Police said they found 39 bundles of tobacco in Mr Obeith's house. The western region has recorded a high number of murders this month with the Bunyoro districts recording 29 murders in just under two months.
Poverty and unemployment have been identified as the other causes of crime and as such, the Police have advised residents to reduce night movement to minimize the risk. In addition the Police have increased community policing, as well as encouraging residents to use local councils to solve disputes. Enditem
