Iggesund Investing Further in Waste Water Purification

Iggesund Paperboard is investing €27 million to improve waste water purification at its Swedish mill, Iggesunds Bruk, where it produces its flagship product, Invercote. The purification facility is due to come online during the autumn of 2009. Iggesunds Bruk's current purification system involves oxygenating the mill's waste water in a lagoon before releasing it into the Baltic Sea. But the new system will be different. "After having investigated possible additional biological purification stages we have chosen to work with chemical precipitation in the new facility," said Iggesunds Bruk's mill director, Staffan Jonsson. "The process will result in a substantial reduction to the oxygen-consuming substances in the waste water plus improvements to basically all our other parameters as well. "The new treatment facility will enable us to maintain world-class standards for waste water discharge within the foreseeable future." Earlier this year, Iggesunds Bruk was given the green light to make investments that will reduce the mill's emissions of fossil carbon dioxide by 75 per cent during the next few years. The reduction is said to be equivalent to taking 20,000 cars, each driving 15,000 km a year, off the road. Iggesund Paperboard is part of the Holmen forest products industry group. Enditem
