Curing Hit by Fuel Shortage in Indonesia's Virginia Region Source from: tr.itsmyiq.com Sep 8, 2008 09/09/2008 A shortage of kerosene in Indonesia's East and West Lombok regions has prompted most of the area's 8,000 tobacco farmers to shut down their tobacco curing barns, according to a report in The Jakarta Post.
Nearly 14,000 barns, locally known as omprongans, are said to have ceased operations due to the fuel shortage.
Lombok, in West Nusa Tenggara, supplies 75 per cent of the nation's flue-cured tobacco, according to local agriculture agency data. Tobacco production on the island is between 35,000 and 40,000 tons annually.
About 40 per cent of this season's crop is yet to be harvested. Enditem
