Tobacco-Producing Region Invests Heavily in Construction of Tobacco Production Facilities Source from: Sanming Daily newspaper 07/14/2008 Sanming City in southeast China's Fujian Province - one of the key tobacco producing regions in China - invested a total of 315 million yuan (45 million U.S. dollars) in the construction of infrastructure facilities for tobacco production in the region in 2007 and 2008.
Of the total investment, 159 million yuan (22.7 million U.S. dollars) was used for the construction of 2,235 new irrigation ditches for tobacco fields and 156 million yuan (22.3 million U.S. dollars) for building 7,439 new intensive curing barns in the 279 villages of the 106 townships in the city, which will benefit nearly 180,000 mu (12,000 hectares) of farmland, including 141,000 mu (9,400 hectares) of tobacco fields.
Since September 2006, Sanming City, in accordance with the target of "spending three to five years improving the establishment of infrastructure facilities in tobacco fields in zones under government protection", has taken steps to strengthen the construction of infrastructure facilities to improve conditions for leaf tobacco production and strengthen the local capacity of comprehensive leaf tobacco production.
