The first international tobacco event to be held in Mexico World Tobacco Latin America 2008 is a new event serving the tobacco markets of Latin America and North America, comprising an exhibition with a comprehensive conference running alongside. The conference will give delegates the opportunity to hear from industry leading experts on those issues that affect the global tobacco community.
More than 300 billion cigarettes are smoked in the Latin American region every year. A third of these are smoked in Brazil with Mexico the second largest market in the region. Latin America is an important growing region too, with Brazil ranked the third biggest in the world.
Mexico is a large exporter of tobacco leaf and more than 25% of all tobacco products sold in Latin America come from Mexico. Mexico has one of highest shares of tobacco sales among Latin American countries, with an estimated 13 million active smokers.
