Crofton, NE Teens Fight Against Tobacco

An estimated 12-hundred people die every day in the United States as a result of tobacco-related illnesses. Eleven Crofton students are making efforts to see that their classmates don't. A student-run program at Crofton High School called "No Limits" kicked off a new tobacco-prevention movement today called Project 12-hundred. "No Limits" educated their classmates on the dangers of tobacco use. And they filled the gym with 12-hundred empty shoes to remind them of the reality of what happens to those who use tobacco. "There's a lot of lives lost every day because of tobacco, said Jackie Freeman, Crofton High School Nurse. "And across the United States, there's 12-hundred people that die every day from tobacco related illness." To raise awareness about the danger of tobacco use, "No Limits" students posted fact sheets in school bathroom stalls, and plan to post more around the community. And that's not all. "We plan on making signs," said Cecely Schidffer, a sophomore, "And putting them up on the highways to tell people how many people die, and what we are all about, and to represent Nebraska and the teenagers who are fighting against it." Students in "No Limits" range from 7th to 12th grade. The shoes were collected by the Salvation Army. Enditem
