China Tobacco Industry Operation Situation in Jan. 2008

The tobacco industry of China, registered balanced growth of both cigarette production and sales in Jan, 2008, with the increment of high-ended cigarettes sales. Cigarette sales lower than expected in some provinces in south of China for effecting by unseasonal rainl and snow. DATA AND ANALYSIS CIGARETTE PRODUCTIONS In Jan., the tobacco industry of China produced 309.95 billion cigarettes (6.199 million cases) for domestic sales, an increase of 276.75 billion cigarettes (5.535 million cases), or 12 percent, over 2007. CIGARETTE SALES In Jan., the tobacco industry sold 271.515 billion cigarettes (5.4303 million cases), an increase of 37.25 billion cigarettes (0.745 million cases), or 15.9 percent, from 234.265 billion cigarettes (4.6853 million cases) of 2007. In Jan., the industry sold 24.7 billion Grade One cigarettes 0.494 million cases), an increase of 9.495 billion cigarettes (0.1899 million cases), or 62.45 percent, from 15.205 billion cigarettes (0.3041million cases) of 2007. In Jan., the industry sold 29.2 billion Grade Two cigarettes (0.584 million cases), an increase of 12.51 billion cigarettes (0.2502 million cases), or 74.96 percent, from 16.69 billion cigarettes (0.3338 million cases) of 2007. The total sales volume of Grade One and Two reached 53.9 billion cigarettes ( 1.078 million cases), 19.85 percent of total sales volume in China, an increase of 6.24 percent over 2007. CIGARETTE INVENTORIES At the end of Jan, the cigarette inventories reached 148.55 billion cigarettes (2.971 million cases), up 0.65 billion cigarettes (13,000 cases) from the level of 147.9 billion cigarettes (2.958 million cases) at the same time of 2007. TAXES AND PROFITS In Jan., the tobacco industry generated 77.43 billion yuan, an increase of 22.45 billion yuan, or up 40.83 percent, from 54.98 billion yuan in 2007. with the amount of manufacturing taxes and profits going up 39.58 percent year-on-year, with the amount of commercial taxes and profits going up 43.29 percent year-on-year. In Jan., the industry earned 34.467 billion yuan in manufacturing and commercial profits, an increase of 45.38 percent over 2007, with the amount of manufacturing profits going up 48.23 percent year-on-year, and with the amount of commercial profits reaching 19.6 billion yuan, up 43.2 percent year-on-year.
