Call for Quit Aids to Sell Alongside Cigarettes

A New York State Department of Health petition urging the Food and Drug Administration to allow over-the-counter sales of nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) in all retail locations where cigarettes are sold has been applauded by the American Legacy Foundation. According to a PRNewswire report, the Foundation says that of the 45 million US citizens who smoke, 70 per cent say they want to quit. The average former smoker is said to make eight to 11 attempts to quit, and one barrier to quitting is reckoned to be the lack of access to NRTs. The Foundation believes that there should be easier access to NRTs in packages that are comparable in price to cigarettes and that provide accurate information about the risks and benefits of NRTs relative to smoking.
