Beijing Factory Lifts Cigarette Exports

The Beijing Cigarette Factory last year exported 1.112 billion cigarettes, 12.2 per cent more than in 2006, according to a Tobacco China Online report. Cigarette export earnings during 2007, at $12.9003 million, were up by 14.7 per cent. Nearly all (more than 99.9 per cent) of the factory's exports comprised the Zhongnanhai (South Central Lake) brand, which is a blended cigarette rather than a Virginia product. The factory, which is a subsidiary of the Shanghai Tobacco Group, attributed its export growth partly to increased levels of co-operation with an unnamed Japanese trading company that had helped strengthen after-sales service on Japanese markets and minimized the impact on Chinese exports that had been sparked by a food safety crisis. The factory had taken steps, too, to promote duty-free sales at Chinese exit points and had been more effective in its promotional activities, something that had helped drive sales in Malaysia 'remarkably'.
