Cigarette Duties Rise Sharply in Bulgaria

Cigarette duties in Bulgaria increased by 34 per cent at the start of the year as part of a three-year program that will see tobacco taxes increase from €31 per thousand cigarettes to €64 per thousand by 2010, according to a Novinite report. Bulgaria joined the EU on January 1 last year and is obliged to increase its cigarette taxes to the minimum level set by the European Commission, €64 per thousand. Enditem
