Report Ranks Nebraska Low on Programs to Discourage Tobacco Use Source from: journalstar.com By The Associated Press Sunday, Dec 16, 2007 12/17/2007 A new national report ranks Nebraska 37th in the nation for the amount of money it spends on programs to discourage kids from using tobacco.
The state spends about $2.5 million a year on tobacco prevention programs. That's down from the $3 million Nebraska spent on such programs last year.
The report says the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that Nebraska should be spending more than $13 million on tobacco prevention programs.
Nebraska will collect nearly $113 million from the tobacco settlement this year, but the report says the state will spend only about 2.2 percent of that money on tobacco prevention programs.
The report was released by several groups, including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Heart Association, and American Lung Association. Enditem
