EU Working on Directive Amendments

The European Commission is to propose changes to the Tobacco Products Directive following its adoption of a second report on the Directive last week. The report provides an assessment of the application of the Directive based on information provided by EU member states. It also incorporates the views of various stakeholders and of the European Parliament in the area of tobacco control. The report outlines possible changes to the Directive that will be discussed with representatives of member states and the parliament prior to the Commission submitting a proposal about amendments. Some suggestions in the second report, such as making the inclusion of graphic health warnings on tobacco packs mandatory, have been part of ongoing discussions, but others, such as the possible inclusion of leaf tobacco in the definition of ingredients, have not been discussed previously.
