In Brief: Tobacco Compliance Checks to be Made

Tobacco compliance checks to be made The Racine County Sheriff's Department and the Caledonia-Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Health Department will be checking local businesses in December to see if they are complying with state law regarding sales of tobacco. The checks will be made in Caledonia and in western Racine County through the end of the month. The enforcement effort is part of the Wisconsin Wins program, which is designed to reduce the sale of tobacco to anyone younger than the age of 18, the state's minimum age for such purchases. Motorcycle found in pond BRISTOL -- An old Honda motorcycle was found dumped in a retention pond Wednesday morning at Branko Inc., 8520 194th Ave. A representative of the company said the bike, a 7200 model, was in "beater condition." A check on the registration showed the bike was not reported stolen. The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department had the motorcycle fished out of the pond and taken to the Sheriff's Department's evidence storage area. Industrial land annexed UNION GROVE -- The Village Board last month annexed 40 acres from the Town of Yorkville just south of the intersection of Highway 11 and 67th Drive and zoned it for light industrial uses. Village Administrator Gary Hanson said a La Crosse firm will be developing the project. Main Street work under way UNION GROVE -- At least three separate crews from Reesman's Excavating and Grading Inc. were working seemingly non-stop Friday on water and sewer line replacement along Main Street (Highway 45) in downtown Union Grove. The ongoing work could result in some delays for motorists as gravel trucks and backhoes do their job. Reesman's is based in the Town of Burlington. The infrastructure work, being done in advance of next summer's paving of the Highway between 7th Avenue and Highway 11, could take up to 22 weeks to complete. Senior development planned UNION GROVE -- The village is working on a developer's agreement with Yorkville resident Rod Hansen regarding plans for senior condominium project on 67th Drive north of Highway 11. The project, to be called Walnut Grove, will consist of ten 20-unit buildings that will have four different appearances. The development is being geared to people 55 and older, Village Administrator Gary Hanson said. The convenient location is directly across 67th Drive from the Piggly Wiggly grocery store, Aurora Pharmacy and Aurora clinic. Enditem
