RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. To Stop Print Ads For 2008

Don't expect to see any print ads featuring RJ Reynolds cigarette brands next year. North Carolina's "Winston-Salem Journal" reports the tobacco giant has announced it will no longer run print ads in newspapers and consumer magazines. Instead, the company plans to focus its cigarette advertising campaigns on direct mail ads, Web sites and age-restricted events that target adult audiences. The announcement came on the same day the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids group launched its protest against an ad in the November 15th issue of Rolling Stone magazine. The four page ad served as bookends to a five page cartoon like spread on Indie rock music. Tobacco - Free advocates argued that the ad connected cartoons with cigarettes. A spokeswoman for the Reynolds company said the move was simply a "business decision, designed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of our marketing programs." The decision will affect print ads for Camel, Kool, Pall Mall and several other brands. Enditem
