Uganda Investigates Tobacco Theft

Uganda's trade ministry is investigating Uganda Leaf Tobacco's marketing practices, reports The New Vision. The company allegedly purchased leaf tobacco in Kibaale district from farmers sponsored by Continental Tobacco Ltd. (CTL). While having permitted ULT to conduct feasibility studies in the region, the ministry says it had not issued the company the required tobacco buyers' certificate. CTL had sponsored farmers in Kibaale to grow about 650 tons of dark-fired tobacco for export. However, the company bought only 200 tons after its farmers sold the bulk of the leaf to third parties.
