Tobacco Board Invests in Alternative Crops

Malaysia's National Tobacco Board plans to set up two factories to process kenaf, an alternative to tobacco, reports the Bernama news agency. The board has been promoting kenaf as a replacement crop for about 15,000 farmers who have been involved in the cultivation of tobacco for the past 30 years in Kelantan and Terengganu. The product is used in the fiber and textile industries, and is considered to have good prospects in the world market. More than 10,000 former tobacco farmers have started planting other crops over the past years in Malaysia. Enditem
