Ex-Mayor 'Snooky' Fined For Illegal Tobacco

Former Ore. Tobacconist Pleads Guilty To Selling Untaxed Products Attorney General Hardy Myers said a former mayor and retailer in Albany has pleaded guilty to avoiding state taxes on tobacco. Myers said Eugene Belhumeur for several years bought untaxed tobacco products from a New Jersey distributor and sold them without reporting and paying the state Revenue Department. Belhumeur was mayor of the city in the mid-1990s and closed Snooky's Downtown Tobacco Shop earlier this year. Snooky is his nickname. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports the business once carried 100 brands of premium cigars, some selling for $10 each. Myers says Belhumeur pleaded guilty Friday to three charges and has been ordered to pay a $20,800 fine, including taxes. Enditem
