New Tobacco Breeding Facility for Hainan Province

The Henan Provincial Tobacco Monopoly Administration is funding the establishment of a tobacco breeding facility in Sanya City, in Hainan province, to take advantage of Hainan's favorable climate, which allows for two growing seasons a year, according to a report by Tobacco China Online. Under such conditions, the new facility will be able to shorten the normal cycle of breeding so as to develop quickly new tobacco varieties suited to the soil conditions in Henan. The report did not spell out what type or types of tobacco were being developed, but it quoted the publication, Oriental Tobacco, and it said that the new varieties would be highly aromatic, so presumably at least some of the development will be aimed at oriental varieties. The new breeding facility will aim, also, at developing varieties capable of delivering stable yields of high quality tobacco highly resistant to plant diseases. Enditem
