UT Researchers: Smokeless Tobacco Ads Targeting Children Source from: Oct 16, 2007 Knoxville (WVLT) 10/17/2007 Researchers at the University of Tennessee say companies continue to target young people in smokeless tobacco advertisements.
The study, "Under the Radar: Smokeless Tobacco Advertising in Magazines with Substantial Youth Readership," was publish online and will appear in the March 2008 issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
The lead author of the study, associate professor in the School of Advertising and Public Relations Margaret Morrison, says despite the guidelines and laws in place to protect kids, advertising is still getting to them.
The study found that in 2002, four years after strict limitations were imposed on companies, advertisements for smokeless tobacco reached 64% of adolescents.
Researchers suggest the actions by advertisers are going unnoticed and shouldn't be ignored. Enditem
