Warehouse Arsonist Stopped by PD

The Maysville Fire Department responded to a tobacco warehouse located at Buckley Place Friday morning after a Maysville police officer doing patrol in the area noticed the smell of smoke. According to MPD Assistant Chief Major Ron Rice, night shift reports also indicated officers on duty had noticed the smell, but had failed to locate a source. Fire Chief Eric Bach said some cardboard inside the warehouse was on fire, and was quickly extinguished. A closer investigation revealed a few other locations where it appeared someone had tried to set fires. Bach said the fires did not take hold likely because the material on fire was on the old dirt floor of the building, with nothing else around it. The warehouse, Bach said, was not in use at the time and, in addition to some cardboard, contained only a few wooden pallets. Bach said the building is an old warehouse, and it appeared at least one door did not have a lock on it, and the building was not secure from intruders. Bach said there did not appear to be any major damage done to the building. The warehouses are located behind the Parker Tobacco Processing Plant, where a fire in May caused severe damage to the structure. Arson is suspected as a cause of that fire, though no arrest has been made in connection with the incident. Police are investigating the incident Friday, and anyone with information should call 606-564-9411. Enditem
