Police Crack Down on Sale of Tobacco to Underage Buyers

Houma police used the weekend to crack down on the sale of tobacco to underage buyers. They ticketed six clerks at six different stores within the city limits, and then ticketed one clerk again the very next day. All of this action comes on the heels of a national report that shows the number of stores caught selling tobacco to kids hit an all-time low last year, but one in ten stores still failed surprise inspections. The inspections are mandated by a 1992 youth smoking law that bans tobacco sales to anyone under the age of 18. States that perform poorly in the inspections face losing federal grants. Enditem
