Man Accused of Throwing Tobacco into Jail Source from: newarkadvocate.com 09/29/2007 A 25-year-old Heath man told deputies with the Licking County Sheriff's Office he was offered $5 per bag of tobacco he tossed into the county jail.
Charged with criminal trespass, he would need to have illegally delivered 50 bags to cover the potential fine he could be subject to.
A deputy in the cruiser lot beside the Licking County Justice Center saw a suspicious man walking behind the jail at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a sheriff's office report.
The deputy drove up to the gate, and while waiting for it to open, the man ran towards the railroad tracks.
The deputy lost sight of the man as he went into the brush off the road, and then a train passed.
Still searching for the man, the deputy saw a vehicle leaving the area and called dispatch. The vehicle was stopped by another deputy.
Inside was a couple and an infant child. The man admitted he was on a mission to throw a 1-inch by three-inch bundle of tobacco, wrapped in electrical tape with a lighter attached, into the jail.
He was charged with criminal trespassing, which is a fourth-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $250 fine. Enditem
