National Tobacco Varieties Improvement Center Sets up Experimental Station

The National Tobacco Varieties Improvement Center operated by the Tobacco Research Institute of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences has recently completed the establishment of its central China experimental station in Wuhan City of central China's Hubei Province, which will be playing the role as a basic support platform for further improvement of the innovation system of China Tobacco Varieties Improvement Center. As the first one of its kind set up since the establishment of China National Tobacco Varieties Improvement Center in 2004, the experimental station is jointly funded by Hubei Provincial Tobacco Corporation and China Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The two sides will cooperate with their respective advantages in the research and development of new technologies, including tobacco varieties improvement technology, fertilizer application technology, premature technology, technology for the prevention and control plant diseases and pests, leaf tobacco curing technology, technology for making tobacco products with unique characteristics, maturity control technology, etc. They will join hands in developing famous brands and accelerating the application of new technologies in production. The Tobacco Research Institute will provide the experimental station with more technical support in a more extensive and more in-depth way in terms of project research, human resources development and technological consultation, in order to actively promote sound, sustainable and steady development of the tobacco industry of Hubei Province, and promote tobacco production in the central China tobacco growing zone to a higher level. The National Tobacco Varieties Improvement Center was established on the basis of the human and material resources, technology support and geographical advantage of the Tobacco Research Institute of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Over recent years, the National Tobacco Varieties Improvement Center has provided tobacco seeds cultivation units across China with various types of materials for breeding, special germ plasm and the world's most advanced breeding technologies; has conducted research of the law of genetic variation of tobacco, enabling China's tobacco breeding theory to reach the highest level in the world; and has developed a series of new tobacco varieties with various characteristics that meet the growing requirement in all major tobacco-growing regions in China. The Tobacco Research Institute and Hubei Provincial Tobacco Corporation have also reached agreement of intent on the introduction and zoning of new tobacco varieties, prevention and control of plant diseases and pests, growing of tobacco of special varieties, allocation of supplies for the development of new tobacco varieties, etc. Enditem
