A federal appeals court is hearing arguments that tobacco companies owe up to $200 billion to millions of smokers, for suggesting that light cigarettes may be less harmful than regular ones.
The panel will decide whether to uphold last summer's ruling by a federal judge in New York, granting class action status to a lawsuit against cigarette makers.
The ruling was appealed by defendants that include several tobacco companies.
