Out of Sight Suggestion

The UK's chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, has suggested that cigarettes should be removed from view in retail outlets as part of a strategy to 'de-normalize' smoking, according to a report in the Daily Mail quoting an interview with Sir Liam that appeared in the Observer. Sir Liam suggested, too, outlawing the sale of packs of 10, reducing from about 3,200 to 200 the number of cigarettes that can be brought in from other EU countries, and applying graphic health warnings to tobacco packages. He said that parents who smoked in front of their children were risking the health of those children and warned that a renewed advertising campaign might be mounted to try to educate parents of the dangers posed.
