Tobacco Could be Used to Help Treat Diabetes

Researchers at the University of Verona have extracted a molecule from genetically modified (GM) tobacco and are testing it on mice to discover whether it could be used to treat diabetes in young people, according to a Tobacco China Online report. Extracting the molecule from GM tobacco was said by researcher, Linda Avesani, to be 100 times cheaper than producing it in a laboratory. And using GM tobacco [rather than other plants that had been genetically modified] offered the advantage that it posed little or no risk of contaminating the food chain. The researchers are confident that the preliminary results, which are expected shortly, will enable them to move to clinical testing on humans. Enditem
