Marlboro Kretek Source from: tobaccoreporter.com Indonesia, Friday, June 22, 2007 06/25/2007 Sampoerna will start selling clove-flavored cigarettes under the Marlboro brand name from July 9, reports Forbes magazine. Marlboro Mix 9 will debut in Java and Bali.
Rezza Zulkasi, an analyst with PT First State Investments Indonesia in Jakarta, praised the move. "It's a unique, shocking and good strategy," he said. "People want to have the international brand, but also want the local taste." With an estimated annual sales value of $10 billion, kretek cigarettes dominate the Indonesian cigarette market.
The new Marlboro machine-rolled cigarettes will reportedly be priced at 7,000 rupiah ($0.78) for a pack of 12 cigarettes, contain 30 milligrams of tar and 1.8 milligrams of nicotine.
Founded in 1913, Sampoerna is Indonesia's oldest cigarette maker. Philip Morris International paid about $5 billion to acquire a 97 stake in Sampoerna from the public and the company's founding Sampoerna family in 2005. Enditem
