Canadian Growers Ask for Buyout Source from: tobaccoreporter.com Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006 02/08/2006 Canada's tobacco board has called for a total buyout of Canada's remaining growers.
The Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers' Marketing Board says the industry has "deteriorated to the point that it is unsustainable." It is appealing to federal election candidates, asking for "a full exit plan" to be carried "out over a defined time period."
The industry has been declining for more than 20 years due to the anti-smoking movement and the increasing use of cheaper leaf imports by Canadian cigarette manufacturers. Enditem
