Kingdom of Tobacco Steps Up Efforts to Develop Basic Tobacco Growing Farmland

Southwest China's Yunnan Province - the largest tobacco producing region in China known as the kingdom of tobacco - is strengthening efforts to develop basic tobacco growing farmland in the province, in order to promote tobacco production on a full scale, realize sustainable development of tobacco production in the province and maintain its leading status in tobacco production in China. In November, the Yunnan Provincial Government issued the Notice on Planning the Development of Basic Tobacco Growing Farmland in the province, which expressly provides for the great significance and targets of developing basic tobacco growing farmland in Yunnan as well as specific measures adoptable to this effect. In the notice, the provincial government plans to spend the next three years developing not less than 1,200 mu (not less than 80 hectares) of new high-standard basic tobacco growing farmland in Yunnan backed by well-established infrastructure facilities and covered by scientific cultivation systems and complete safeguards, which will be capable of generating bumper harvests steadily. The notice provides that the new basic tobacco growing farmland to be developed shall be fully used for growing tobacco rotationally every other year, shall be accessible to irrigation by 100 percent and shall be guaranteed of water supply in 30 days following transplantation of tobacco seedlings and during any drought season by 100 percent.
