Checks In The Mail For N.C. Tobacco Growers

Checks are now in the mail for more than 76,000 North Carolina tobacco growers and quota holders. The more than $152 million in checks were delayed by a year of legal fighting over the payments that tobacco companies did not want to make. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said farmers need the cash to pay down debt and to help recover from the year that brought high fuel costs and bad weather. The checks are the final payment to farmers and quota holders from a deal that was negotiated between tobacco companies and the 14 tobacco-producing states. Enditem
