Henan Increasing Leaf Subsidies

Henan is planning to increase its subsidies for leaf tobacco growing in the province next year in an effort to ensure sustainable development of its tobacco production, according to the Henan Daily. The provincial government has decided to lift subsidies, which stood at 200 million yuan this year, to 280 million yuan in 2006. They will be used mainly for developing intensive tobacco seedling programs and buying inputs for growing and curing. The subsidies will next year provide 200 yuan per mu (0.067 ha) - up from 185 yuan per mu in 2005 - and the plan calls for them to be lifted gradually to 300 yuan per mu by 2010. Enditem
