Key Tobacco-Growing Region Applies GAP Management Model

Shizong County in Qujing City of southwest China's Yunnan Province - a key tobacco-growing region in China - has applied the GAP model in organization and management of tobacco production in the county on a full scale. So far, the application of the GAP model has covered the project of cooperation with Nanjing Cigarette Factory in developing high-quality leaf tobacco on 4,000 mu (266.7 hectares) of farmland in substitution for tobacco imports, the project of cooperation with Wuhan Tobacco Group in developing high-quality leaf tobacco on 3,000 mu (200 hectares) of farmland in substitution for tobacco imports, the project of developing 2,000 mu (133.3 hectares) of provincial-level model plantations for growing high-quality tobacco, and the project of developing 5,000 mu (333.3 hectares) of model plantations for growing a high-quality tobacco variety known as Red Flower Big Gold Coin. Kuishan Town in Shizong County has been designated as a model area for applying the GAP model. Under the GAP model, Shizong County has strictly observed the GAP technical regulations in organizing and managing tobacco production and State purchase of leaf tobacco, in efforts to protect the local environment, lower the content of residual of pesticides in leaf tobacco and produce highly safe leaf tobacco products. In applying the GAP model, Shizong County has managed to monitor the quality of water and atmosphere and the environment, and has taken steps to protect water resources and improve soil in the region. Through the application of the GAP model, Shizong County has succeeded in generalizing advanced tobacco production technologies, keeping improving the quality of tobacco production technologies, upgrading quality control measures, accelerating the pace of bringing tobacco production in the county in line with international standards, reaching a balance between tobacco production and environmental protection, and ensuring the development of tobacco production in the region in well-coordinated and sustainable way.
