Meteorological Bureau Provides Services for Tobacco Growi

Yuanjiang County Meteorological Bureau in southwest China's Yunnan Province has recently started a program to cooperate with Yuanjiang County Tobacco Company in providing services for tobacco growing in the county. Under the program, the county meteorological bureau and county tobacco company have jointly invested in establishing a meteorological observatory in a model tobacco production base in the county. The establishment of the meteorological observatory is intended to monitor changes of temperatures, humidity and soil in the region in order to provide more specific meteorological information for the transplantation of tobacco seedlings, cultivation management, prevention and control of pests and plant diseases, application of fertilizer, etc in tobacco growing. Through the collection and analysis of climate changes in the region on a long-term basis, the meteorological observatory will provide services of meteorological guidance to the timing of tobacco growing and transplantation of tobacco seedlings. Since the beginning of 2005, Yuanjiang County has been hit by a drought. In providing services for agricultural production, Yuanjiang County Meteorological Bureau started cooperation with local enterprises including the county tobacco company in March in operating projects of precipitation enhancement and hails elimination on a large scale, making weather forecasts for tobacco growing and offering meteorological proposals for tobacco production in all areas of the county. Meanwhile, Yuanjiang County Meteorological Bureau has cooperated with the local telecommunications company in starting a program of making weather forecasts through cellular phone notes, in order that local farmers can receive information on weather conditions in the region in a soonest way.
