Tobacco production to vary among counties The county ag extension agent says most Daviess County tobacco farmers are planning to continue production in the first post-tobacco buyout planting season. Clint Hardy says all of the producers he's spoken with have obtained contracts with the tobacco companies. He also says he's spoken to a few individuals who are going to get out of production or cut back significantly on production. County Ag Extension Agent Diane Perkins in neighboring Hancock County, only one-fourth of the farmers who grew tobacco last year will plant a crop this year. The tobacco buyout passed by Congress last year ended the Depression-era system of price and production controls. The buyout will pay about ten billion dollars to the nation's tobacco farmers to give up their production quotas and move into a free market. Enditem
