Universal Reduces Tobacco Production Forecasts

Universal Leaf has cut its forecasts for the 2005 production of flue-cured and burley tobaccos in some countries. The company has slashed its projected output of flue-cured leaf in Argentina by 11 percent to 88 million kg. In Mozambique, it cut the projected crop of lower-grade burley by 9.3 percent to 40 million kg. Indonesia's anticipated output was cut from 40 million kg to 38 million kg. Universal says it could cut Tanzania's expected flue-cured crop forecast to 54 million kg, a reduction of 3 million kg. Universal raised Brazil's estimated burley crop to 142 million kg from 140 million kg. Universal's worldwide forecast for the top grade of the flue-cured crop is 3.813 billion kg, while the prediction for the burley crop is 857 million kg. Enditem
